Lynyrd Skynyrd – On The Hunt

Posted by admin on July 14th, 2010 and filed under hunting | 25 Comments »

This is a song from the Jacksonville Florida based southern rock band, Lynyrd Skynyrd. Possibly one of the greatest bands ever. This song is a very underrated song off their 3rd studio album “Nuthin’ Fancy”.

What are good things to do while spirit hunting?

Posted by admin on July 12th, 2010 and filed under hunting | 4 Comments »

What are some good household tools you could use to help with spirit hunting? I don’t want to here nothing because they aren’t real, I won’t even read it so don’t bother putting it down. To those who do know for real and aren’t joking please put down your advice. Thanks!
I’m asking about recording devices and things like that.

A few items you should have with you is Flashlight and spare batteries, A camera digital or film set the camera to night and a faster shutter speed (limits blur). A voice recorder I prefer digital because there is less mechanical noise (less sound matrix). If you have a video camera with night vision bring that also. If outside please bring a non-scented bug repellent Lastly a minor first aide kit and water
Do not wear reflective clothing and perfumes or cologne.

My equipment is Fuji Digital 10 mega pixel camera, Fuji 35 mm film
Olympus 4500 Digital voice, Sony night vision Camcorder, Sony Digital Camcorder. I cary 2 mini mag led flashlights. This is my basics

While you are investigating you should take pics. When taking pics always take at least 2 in the same spot and angle. This shows any differences that may happen. If you use a voice recorder, try to hold it still and awy from your mouth, if you can set it on a stable surface do so. Ask quesions precisely, clearly and politely. Try to leave 5 to 10 seconds at least between questions. Make sure you are always aware of where you are and your surroundings.
If you are going to try to do some armature investigating please understand that most areas are very dangerous. You should always have a partner. Cemeteries are not the best place unless they are away from town and you know the sounds of your wildlife in the area.
In any place you MUST be cautious and courteous to your surroundings. NEVER leave trash or be disrespectful.

What Will Happen If We All Stopped Hunting And Killing Animals?

Posted by admin on July 6th, 2010 and filed under hunting | 14 Comments »

The animal rights guys say that we should stop hunting and killing wild animals and farm animals too. I disagree with them, that is why I hunt Bambi and Thumper.

What will happen to Earth if everyone stopped for hunting and killing animals for 5 years?

What animal rights activists don’t understand about hunting is that we are actually helping the wildlife. If hunting were banned there would be overpopulation and lack of food and habitat. Disease would take over and it would not stop with wildlife. Domestic animals and then people would end up with disease. The animals would not be healthy and they would end up dying out, but not before reaking havoc on the environment and those in it… Can you imagine what it would be like to have rabid animals wondering the streets of suburban communities? Giving pets rabies and then people… The vegans would really be upset when they didn’t have anything to eat because the deer and other wildlife were eating up all of the crops….

What would be a appropriate fee to charge someone for full hunting privileges?

Posted by admin on July 3rd, 2010 and filed under hunting | 8 Comments »

We have 200 acres of rural fenced in hunting land. We have someone interested in having exclusive right to hunt, what would be a fair fee?
I would only deal with hunters that kill to eat their food not to hunt, just to hunt to kill. If you eat meat don’t criticize.

a good sized piece of meat is the going rate in my area.

At what age can my dog start hunting upland birds?

Posted by admin on June 30th, 2010 and filed under hunting | 3 Comments »

I have a 3 month old English Springer Spaniel pup. I would like him to be my bird dog someday. At what age can he actually hunt, and when should I start training him on hunting tasks? I do not really have much bird hunting experience myself. I hunt big game but have always wanted to bird hunt. I just don’t have anyone to do it with, so I got my own partner!

Also, is it possible to completely train him at home, or should I seek professional advice?

Thanks!

People disagree on this point. For upland dogs, I’m in the camp of later is actually better. Exposure to wings and birdscent can be started as early as possible, but training where there’s more pressure on the dog (whoah training, formal OB, collar conditioning) should be started between 6mo and a year. Retriever people start earlier, but retriever training is more OB heavy. With the pointing and flushing dogs, you want to have a confident dog, and you want to develop and keep that antural bird drive as intact as possible. Pressure too early can quash a little of that drive and independence, and you can end up with a ’sticky’ dog who won’t venture far enough out on its own to be much good at finding birds.

As far as force fetching goes, many retriever people will begin with ‘hold’ (pretty low pressure) as soon as the adult teeth are all in and move to the fetch with ear pinch or toe hitch after a good hold is established. Many upland people wait until a year for force fetch with their pointing a flushing breeds, however.

It IS possible to train him as an amateur, but I would invest in a good training DVD program. There are a bunch of good ones, and they walk you through the entire process.

Here’s a link to a few:

Good Luck!

Add: H&F’s advice about whistle training and joining a group is really good. I took it, and now have a whole network for my lab!

What type of pellets do you prefer for hunting small game?

Posted by admin on June 28th, 2010 and filed under hunting | 5 Comments »

I have a .177 cal air rifle. Are the Crosman Copperhead Flat Nose Pellets any good for hunting? What do you prefer or recommend using? Thanks!

Josh is correct, except a .410 or 20 ga would be adequate. I find .22’s and pellets really mess up the animal with a gut shot, whereas the shot do not.
