I have a 3 month old English Springer Spaniel pup. I would like him to be my bird dog someday. At what age can he actually hunt, and when should I start training him on hunting tasks? I do not really have much bird hunting experience myself. I hunt big game but have always wanted to bird hunt. I just don’t have anyone to do it with, so I got my own partner!
Also, is it possible to completely train him at home, or should I seek professional advice?
Thanks!
People disagree on this point. For upland dogs, I’m in the camp of later is actually better. Exposure to wings and birdscent can be started as early as possible, but training where there’s more pressure on the dog (whoah training, formal OB, collar conditioning) should be started between 6mo and a year. Retriever people start earlier, but retriever training is more OB heavy. With the pointing and flushing dogs, you want to have a confident dog, and you want to develop and keep that antural bird drive as intact as possible. Pressure too early can quash a little of that drive and independence, and you can end up with a ’sticky’ dog who won’t venture far enough out on its own to be much good at finding birds.
As far as force fetching goes, many retriever people will begin with ‘hold’ (pretty low pressure) as soon as the adult teeth are all in and move to the fetch with ear pinch or toe hitch after a good hold is established. Many upland people wait until a year for force fetch with their pointing a flushing breeds, however.
It IS possible to train him as an amateur, but I would invest in a good training DVD program. There are a bunch of good ones, and they walk you through the entire process.

Good Luck!
Add: H&F’s advice about whistle training and joining a group is really good. I took it, and now have a whole network for my lab!
The song is on the soundtrack, but I cant remember where in the movie it’s played. Does anyone know?
I believe it’s played towards the beginning, during the scene that shows the area. You know, the camera is sweeping around the bars and windmills and people…?
On a full tank of gas, how far can you go?
That would depend on how and where you drive the vehicle. I would guess around 320 miles or 510km depending on the tank size.

I have a .177 cal air rifle. Are the Crosman Copperhead Flat Nose Pellets any good for hunting? What do you prefer or recommend using? Thanks!
Josh is correct, except a .410 or 20 ga would be adequate. I find .22’s and pellets really mess up the animal with a gut shot, whereas the shot do not.
I am working on an oral project, and could not find anything Online.
This is like somewhere in Montana or whatever? You are going to need advice from a local, since pronunciation of place names is beyond idiosyncratic. E.g, how do you pronounce Versailles? Bolivar? Conewango? Chili?
My suggestion is to look on the map (google), and find a medium-size town within 25 miles or so if possible (or anyway, some kind of town large enough to have a website or chamber of commerce or something, even a store), and then find somebody or something to email. More efficient, however, is to use a phone directory online to get the number of anybody living nearby, and just call that person up (you may need to make several tries). This will work for sure, and the person will be glad to help you–relieved that you aren’t trying to sell him vinyl siding.
i really want to change my style. all i wear everyday is a tee shirt and jeans and i’m sick of it. i would love to dress like miley. does anyone know any stores online or at a mall or somewhere where i can get clothes like that? suggestions and tips on that type of style would also be appreciated. thanks.
